Fastest Way To Get Rid Of A Cold Sore

Furthermore, there are also preventative steps that an individual can take that will decrease the number of outbreaks they experience.

Cover Up The Cold Sore

Vigorously covering up your cold sore with petroleum jelly (also commonly referred to as Vaseline) is one of the most common ways to speed up the healing process. It is also effective in protecting the cold sore from further infection from bacteria. If a cold sore is painful, it is also suggested to apply an ointment that contains Benzocaine. The ointment will temporarily numb the cold sore, relieving you of any pain. Regardless of how embarrassing a cold sore is, it is never a good idea to cover up a cold sore with makeup. This is because the chemicals in makeup can aggravate the cold sore and possibly make the situation worse.

Never Touch a Cold Sore

It is important to realize that cold sores are nothing like a pimple, zit, or blackhead. This means you should never attempt to squeeze, pick, or pinch it. This is because it can cause bacterial infections to occur. Obviously, you are going to want to avoid kissing anyone or sharing items that come in contact with your cold sore, as it is extremely contagious.

Cold Sore Warnings

While it is extremely rare, it is possible to contract the herpes simplex virus in the optical cavity. It is important to seek the attention of a doctor immediately if you suspect an outbreak on or near your eye because it can cause permanent damage. In the event that secondary bacterial infection occurs, an individual would have to take oral antibiotics in order to fight off the infections. Individuals with weak immune systems, including the elderly, individuals undergoing chemotherapy, and people who have Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, are prone to more serious conditions of the herpes simplex virus.

How to Get Rid of a Cold Sore Scab Quickly

It is human nature to want to get rid of a cold sore scab as quickly as possible. However, the scab of a cold sore is an essential part of the healing process, especially in the prevention of infection. For that reason it is actually better (despite what you might want) to let the scab heal and fall off on its own schedule. The best thing you can do is to keep the area as clean as possible. You can also cover the scab with a thick layer of petroleum jelly in order to keep the scab moist, which will prevent it from cracking.

Despite how tempting it may be, it is important to avoid even picking at a cold sore scab. Picking the scab is only going to cause the scab to take longer to heal. Eventually the scab will heal completely and fall off on its own. Not only can picking at it delay the healing, but it can also cause the area around the scab to become infected.

How to Prevent Cold Sores

Obviously, the number one way to prevent cold sores is by avoiding direct contact with sores or blisters. The easiest way to do this is to avoid sharing personal and intimate items with another person. If you already experience cold sore outbreaks there are things you can do to prevent future breakouts. This includes avoiding cold sore triggers. While triggers do vary from one person to the next there are several common ones including direct sunlight, stress, fevers, colds, menstrual cycles, and certain types of food.

Herpes simplex virus can also be a sexually transmitted disease, so prevention can come from waiting until you are in a monogamous relationship with someone who has been tested for HSV. Abstinence should also be practiced if herpes flair up is currently witnessed.

A cold sore is nothing more than a manifestation of a non-curable form of the virus called herpes simplex. If an individual leaves their cold sore alone, it will eventually go away on its own without the need of any form of treatment. Unfortunately, this is something that can take several weeks to occur, and most people with a cold sore do not want to wait the length of time it takes for it to go away. While there are a number of over the counter and prescription medications that a person could use to get rid of a cold sore fast, home remedies are a more natural and effective approach.

Because herpes simplex virus is not curable, there is nothing that is going to cure cold sores permanently. There is no over the counter drug, prescription medication, or home remedy that is permanently going to get rid of the condition. Luckily, there are a number of home remedies that can reduce the pain, cut down the number of outbreaks, and quickly dissolve outbreaks.
